Expatriate Life Insurance Survey 2019 – Critical Illness Cover …

Life Insurance & Critical Illness Cover …

Unusual Risks, the UK Life Insurance advisers, are today announcing the results of their recent Expatriate Insurance Survey. After conducting their latest research into the availability of Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover to British Expatriates, they can now confirm that only 10% of (1 in 10) UK insurance companies offer Life Insurance products to British Citizens living abroad.

This was a significant reduction on the previous year’s figure of 21% and indicates that British Expats now have significantly fewer options to find adequate Life Insurance to meet their requirements. Also, in the survey it was established that only one single provider is now prepared to accept an application for Critical Illness Cover and only in very limited circumstances.

Speaking about their survey, Chris Morgan, Lead Financial Adviser of Unusual Risks said;

‘Over the last year there has once again been a decrease in the availability of Life Insurance products for British Expats living abroad. Although the majority of the mainstream UK Insurers such as Legal & General, Friends Life and Aviva have all now withdrawn from offering this type of cover, there are still limited options for Expats seeking Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover’.

‘There are still many groups of British Expatriates that have genuine reasons for needing a UK based Life Assurance plan, such as those with property interests, outstanding mortgage or tax interests in the UK. We have also met British Expatriates who require Life Assurance to protect family members and children who are still residents in the United Kingdom’.

Unusual Risks were also able to report that the average amount of Life Insurance being taken out by British Expats is now £383,125, which is a reduction on the previous year’s figure of £430,714. We believe this is due to new restrictions, with cover only being available to those with a UK Property, UK Mortgage, UK Bank Account or close dependents remaining in the UK.

Chris Morgan and Unusual Risks have been helping the British Expatriate community for the last seven years to arrange all types of Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover policies to meet their needs. They are experienced at tailoring Life Insurance policies for British people living abroad in all corners of the world.

Expat Life Insurance – How to get cover for UK Citizens abroad? ….

UK Based Life Insurance, By Chris Morgan

We have recently seen a sharp increase in UK Citizens living abroad who approach us looking for the security of a UK Life Insurance policy with a large reputable company.

The “Brexit” situation between Europe and the United Kingdom seems to be influencing financial decisions and their desire to make certain that should anything happen to them their families are looked after.

Many British citizens living abroad have been considering their Life Insurance needs and have been trying upgrade the amounts of cover that they have in place.

Most of the mainstream companies like Legal & General, Aviva, Friends Life and Vitality won’t allow cover for Expat’s anymore …

These are some of the situations we have advised on recently …

  • British Citizens who have mortgages in the UK that do not have any Life Insurance or Critical Illness Cover.
  • British Expats who still have dependent family and children in the UK that need to protect their loved ones
  • British Expats who may be facing an Inheritance Tax Liability on their estate in the future
  • British Expats Paying for a relative’s UK private school, university or care home fees
  • UK companies with overseas an key person or shareholder who is a British Citizen.
  • In all cases a UK Bank account was required

In order to be accepted for a Life Insurance or Critical Illness Cover policy in the UK a British Expat will need to have one of the “insurance interests” listed above and also still hold a UK Bank Account.

We have special arrangements with Life Insurance Companies for getting policies agreed quickly for applicants and even can arrange an overseas medical if needed by the Life Insurance Company.

We also have international conferencing facilities and offer a free 15 minute initial phone consultation, so you can find out quickly if you qualify for Expat Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover.

BRITISH EXPAT LIFE INSURANCE AND CRITICAL ILLNESS COVER – LATEST NEWS – FEBRUARY 2019

Why has Expat Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover become so difficult to obtain for UK Citizens living abroad?

It used to be so easy with companies like Legal & General, Aviva, Lutine and Friends Provident all offering Life Insurance to those with “intent to return to the UK”. Just tick a box on the application form regarding residency and they would issue a policy and no further questions would be asked.

The latest underwriting rules that are now in place for UK Citizens are far more strict, with insurable interest needing to be proven. It is still possible to arrange Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover for UK Expats, but in reality only through a specialist financial adviser like Unusual Risks.

These are the situations where UK Expats people are still likely to qualify for Life Insurance and Critical Illness cover?

  • Outstanding Mortgage on a UK property
  • Dependent spouse and young children living in the UK
  • UK inheritance tax (IHT) liability
  • Paying for a relative’s UK private school, university or care home fees
  • UK company with overseas key person or shareholder
  • In all cases a UK Bank account is still required

We have special “Fast” medical underwriting facilities with insurance companies where in the majority of cases we can get formal terms for clients, within a short time of submitting an application form. We also have access to the lowest premium rates to British Expats, as we only use mainstream insurers.

For policies with particularly large sums assured and premiums we can even arrange medicals abroad in the country where you are resident, which makes obtaining insurance for you as easy as possible. We have special medical arrangements with insurers that can make Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover as smooth as possible to obtain for for British Expats living abroad.

BRITISH EXPAT LIFE INSURANCE & CRITICAL ILLNESS COVER … What’s Important !

It seems a completely obvious point, but the most important factor when taking out either Life Insurance or Critical Illness Cover is making certain the policy actually covers Expats living abroad. Most of the UK insurers actually exclude people who live outside of the UK.

It’s crucial to check that you are applying for the right policy ! Better still get someone else to check, who is qualified and has vast experience of placing cover for British Expats. Why would you take a chance with something so important?

In my last two articles I’m came out heavily on these points …

http://www.expatriate-life-assurance.co.uk/?p=317 (The Pitfalls when buying Insurance?)

http://www.expatriate-life-assurance.co.uk/?p=311 (Third Party or Fully Comprehensive?)

We feel very strongly about people trying to take out cover, where they may not be giving the insurer the full picture about their health, or may not be disclosing their residency situation fully. We have met clients prepared to make false declarations in order to make a small two pounds per month saving on their monthly premiums.

They were willing to risk the policy not paying out the benefits, because of an incorrect declaration. To say this is ridiculous is an under statement, full disclosure of all the facts is essential when taking out a Life Insurance or Critical Illness Cover for any British Expat.

Disclosure needs to be made in regards to health and residential status, which will certainly mean answering more questions up front and following an “advice and recommendation” process. We strongly advice British Expats not to buy their Life Insurance through comparison websites or mainstream brokers, as it’s unlikely you will find the best insurance for your needs.

Unusual Risks have special arrangements with underwriters and insurers to assess eligibility for British Expats, which means you get the best possible service and premiums for your circumstances. Our insurers are “Expat Friendly” which means you can be sure the policy will offer you “fully comprehensive” cover.

BRITISH EXPATRIATE LIFE INSURANCE & CRITICAL ILLNESS COVER … The Pitfalls When Buying Insurance !

Why would you buy Life Assurance if it wasn’t “Expat Friendly”? I’m meeting more and more clients who have quotes for Life Assurance and/or Critical Illness Cover and they are not even certain the product is suitable for British Expats living outside the UK.

Most people contact me because they want the best quality cover, with a strong UK insurer and the security that comes with it. What I don’t understand is why would anybody even consider buying a product from an internet comparison site or through a mainstream broker if the products being offered were completely unsuitable?

Be sure to also see my previous article “Third Party or Fully Comprehensive”? http://www.expatriate-life-assurance.co.uk/?p=311

FULLY COMPREHENSIVE

There are several situation’s where a UK Insurer may consider offering cover to a British Expat living abroad, but you need to be aware that not all UK insurers offer cover to Expats. Expert specialist advice is essential to make sure you are offered “Fully Comprehensive cover” and not “Third Party” only cover.

INSURABLE INTEREST

Any UK Insurers offering Life Assurance or Critical Illness Cover to a Brit abroad is going to want clear evidence of “Insurable Interest”, which most consumers will not know how to do. This issue in itself alone could invalidate your Insurance policy in the future, so if you are a British Expat looking for cover, it’s best to seek specialist advice.

COMPETITIVE PREMIUMS

As a British Expat you are highly unlikely to qualify for the absolute cheapest policy offered in the market, because those insurers do not offer cover to people spending more than six months outside the UK. However, all is not lost because it is still possible to access the highest quality cover, at very competitive prices through a specialist broker.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Most leading UK insurers have specific terms and conditions relating to British Expats and especially strict criteria around “Insurance Interest” and “Residency”. Why would you spend your valuable spare time during evenings and weekends researching, when a professional adviser knows the answers already?

COMPARISON WEBSITES

Expat Life Assurance and Critical Illness Cover is not the type of policy you should be trying to buy on comparison websites, as most UK insurers have strict criteria around residency and you are likely to buy an invalid policy. They are simply unsuitable, so why would you even consider paying premiums for cover bought in this way?

MAINSTREAM BROKER

The average mainstream broker you could ask to offer advice on “Expat insurance”, will encounter this issue maybe once a year at the most. The one’s outside of the London financial district, probably hardly ever in their whole careers, so their knowledge on these issues is going to be very limited to say the least. I know this because many of them phone my office looking for help with their clients.

ADVICE & RECOMMENDATION

At Unusual Risks we only offer a “Fully Comprehensive” service with financial advice included. The premium you eventually receive will be very competitive, but we are unlikely to offer you the absolute cheapest premium in the market, because those products do not even cover British Expats living abroad. We believe it is crucial that the products we recommend are specific to the needs of British Expats and are “Expat Friendly”.

BRITISH EXPAT LIFE INSURANCE AND CRITICAL ILLNESS … Third Party? or Fully Comprehensive?

We have recently been approached by several Expat clients whose main aim has been to secure the absolute lowest premium for their Life Insurance and Critical illness Cover ….

The odd thing about this is that even though they are either living abroad already, or have intentions of living abroad in the near future, they are willing to sacrifice the quality of cover and specialist financial advice, for even the smallest of savings per month.

COMPARISON WEBSITES

There are several ways you could buy Life Insurance and Critical Illness as an expat, but the one way that we certainly DO NOT recommend is buying via“ Direct Offer” or via “Internet Websites”. These distribution routes do not include advice, therefore it is difficult to know for sure if the policy covers Expats. Most of the products offered through this route do not even cover British Expats, due to complex residency terms and conditions.

MAINSTREAM BROKERS

Many people approach “Mainstream Brokers” without realising they rarely encounter British Expats looking for Life Insurance and critical illness cover. This means they are increasingly likely to offer you a product that is unsuitable for an Expat. We regularly meet clients who have been offered an incorrect product, due to the lack of knowledge of the mainstream financial adviser.

SPECIALIST FINANCIAL ADVICE

Of course our recommended distribution route is through a “Specialist Financial Adviser” like Unusual Risks, because we have looked after literally hundreds of British Expats before and are completely up to date with the latest availability of products. This way you will receive the best “Expat Friendly” products available and be sure the terms and conditions of the policy are “inclusive” of your residential circumstances.

REAL LIFE EXAMPLES

We have been completely shocked these last few weeks by clients who have approached us for “quote comparisons” against products that won’t even pay out benefits to a British Expat upon a claim, or have restrictions around the counties that are included in the policy. Most UK Life Assurance Companies do not even offer cover and certainly will not be pay out benefits to an expat on a claim.

SPECIALIST PRODUCT

What is remarkable is that the quote comparison that we provided, was for an “Expat Friendly” product and was only £2 per month extra in premium. The margins between most Term Life and Critical Illness Cover products are actually very slim these days. The cost of “Fully Comprehensive” cover that is “Inclusive” of Expats is actually still very competitive.

SERIOUS ISSUES

So to look at Life Insurance using terminology normally used for car insurance. If you are going to be resident abroad and spend time outside of the UK, would you rather be covered only for “Third Party” cover or prefer to have “Fully Comprehensive” cover? We think the answer to this question is absolutely obvious, why would you pay any premium to an insurance company for a policy that simply does not cover you?

ADVICE & RECOMMENDATION

At Unusual Risks we only offer a “Fully Comprehensive” service with financial advice included. The premium you eventually receive will be very competitive, but we are unlikely to offer you the absolute cheapest premium in the market, because those products do not even cover British Expats living abroad. We believe it is crucial that the products we recommend are specific to the needs of British Expats and are “Expat Friendly”.

LIFE INSURANCE & CRITICAL ILLNESS COVER FOR BRITISH EXPATS – DECEMBER 2017

The market has been constantly changing in 2017 for British Expat Life Insurance and British Expat Critical Illness Cover. Insurance providers have been appearing and disappearing at a rapid pace, which means independent financial advice is absolutely essential before taking any form of Expat Cover.

If you spend more than six months of the year outside of the UK you without any doubt will need to arrange specialist cover.

Life Assurance

We believe as British Expats, you are entitled to take Life Insurance in the UK. However, there are still only limited providers that offer insurance to UK Citizens living abroad. It is still possible in certain circumstances, even though UK Providers have become very strict about who they offer cover to this year.

In order to apply you must still have a UK Bank Account, own a UK Property and have a UK Mortgage or alternatively still have financially dependent family resident in the UK.

Critical Illness Cover

Critical Illness Cover has been off the agenda for British Expats for sometime after the withdrawal of all the major UK Insurers from this market. Just when we had almost given up hope of being able to offer this again, this product has just been made available again to certain groups of Expats.

Once again you must still have a UK Bank Account, UK Property and a UK Mortgage to apply for cover, or have financially dependent family in the UK.

Terms & Conditions

We were recently approached by a mainstream broker, asking us questions about a Life & Critical Illness Cover he was arranging for an Expat client currently based in the United States. This is an example of why British Expats should seek advice from a financial adviser with years of experience arranging cover for UK Citizens living abroad.

The T&C’s of most policies exclude USA at this moment in time, so the policy he was arranging is in fact invalid. We have detailed knowledge of Expat Life and Critical Illness Cover. If you are unsure if the country where you are resident is insurable, then we can research this for you.

BRITISH EXPAT LIFE INSURANCE & CRITICAL ILLNESS COVER – LATEST NEWS SEPTEMBER 2017

Unusual Risks are now arranging Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover for British Expats, which until only a few months ago was difficult for Life Insurance and impossible for Critical Illness Cover.

Critical Illness Cover is highly relevant to Expats living outside the UK as it is A PRODUCT known for providing a lump sum benefit in the event of serious illness, however applicants should seek specialist advice before taking cover.

Here are some top tips for British Expats looking for Cover.

1) Most UK Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover providers will have a minimum number of weeks that a UK citizen has to be in the UK, which makes most of their products unsuitable for British Expats.

2) Some Life Insurance and Critical Illness Providers will refuse to insure people living in certain countries, so for example Russia, Ukraine, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan and India at times have all been difficult to insure. Most insurers who insure expats have approved and unapproved countries they will insure.

3) It is also extremely important to check the claims procedures on any policy that you consider taking out, as they may have specific rules particularly around Critical Illness claims. Does your policy have special provisions if you live in certain countries?

4)  If you decide to buy Life Insurance or critical illness cover direct, through a mainstream financial adviser or broker, how can you be sure they know about all of the approved countries and claims procedures? Most do not have this knowledge, so speak to someone that advises British Expats all of the time.

5) The vast majority of Independent Financial Advisers that are licenced outside of the UK, like arranging Pensions and Investments, but rarely enjoy arranging Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover. This is because their licencing does not extend to the UK and their knowledge of UK insurance products in any detail is very limited.

6) Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover terms and conditions for British Expats are extremely technical and you should seek specialist advice before taking out a policy.

Chris Morgan and Unusual Risks are the UK’s most experienced and knowledgeable financial advisers, who advise British Expats on their Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover. We look closely at the approved and unapproved countries, along with claims procedures of any Life Insurance policies we recommend.

All of the Insurance companies we recommend are based in the UK and strong financial standing. If you are looking for a UK Insurance policy and are currently living abroad, then contact us for a no obligation quotation.
