Expatriate Life Insurance, Life Assurance & Critical Illness Cover – “Best Premium & Terms Comparison”

Unusual Risks the Expatriate Insurance Advisers and our lead financial adviser Chris Morgan having been serving the Expatriate Community for over ten years.

During this time Chris has advised many UK Expat clients about taking out Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover. Although Life Insurance Cover is currently very limited to British Expats living abroad, there are still some groups that do qualify for either Life Insurance or Critical Illness Cover.

Best Premium Comparison

Over the last two decades there have been several “generations” of Expat Life Assurance products, with the latest offering the best premiums and best terms ever to people who still qualify for cover.

These changes have been wonderful for lowering the overall price of Expat Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover, however it has become apparent that many people are still simply buying the wrong product or being recommended the wrong product by mainstreams brokers, who do not know about this complicated subject.

The Cost of Getting the Wrong Product

We have met a number of clients recently who have been offered either the wrong product by their financial adviser, or have approached the wrong company themselves for Expat Insurance. You have a 1 in 20 chance of finding the best product, so why on earth would you not take advice from the Expat Communities leading specialist financial adviser?

Our latest “Premium Comparison” survey takes into account all Insurance Comparison websites, Banks, Building Societies and Insurance Companies. With two recent cases the difference between the cheapest and most expensive premiums equated to a huge 35% difference for a client applying for £250,000 of cover.

Unsuitable Providers & Products

Over the last ten years we have seen many clients who have either taken out, or have been recommended the wrong policy by financial advisers. Some had UK based Life Insurance policies that simply did not cover them, as they spend more than six months a years outside the UK.

If you are looking for Expat Life Insurance or Critical Illness Cover them email us with answers to these five basic question to find out if you qualify for cover?

  1. Do you still have a mortgage and property in the UK ?
  2. Do you still have financial dependents in the UK?
  3. Do you still have a bank account in the UK?
  4. Where in the world you are currently resident?
  5. How long you have been outside the UK? (Date you left the UK)
  6. How long you intend on staying outside the UK?

It simply does not make sense trying to find Life Insurance Cover yourself, when you can secure the lowest Life Insurance premiums through a specialist Expat Life Insurance Broker with over ten years experience in finding Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover.

No financial adviser in the UK has more knowledge of Expat Life Assurance than Chris Morgan our lead financial adviser. We are the UK’s most experienced financial advisers looking after British Expats Living Abroad.

Expatriate Life Insurance Survey 2019 – Critical Illness Cover …

Life Insurance & Critical Illness Cover …

Unusual Risks, the UK Life Insurance advisers, are today announcing the results of their recent Expatriate Insurance Survey. After conducting their latest research into the availability of Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover to British Expatriates, they can now confirm that only 10% of (1 in 10) UK insurance companies offer Life Insurance products to British Citizens living abroad.

This was a significant reduction on the previous year’s figure of 21% and indicates that British Expats now have significantly fewer options to find adequate Life Insurance to meet their requirements. Also, in the survey it was established that only one single provider is now prepared to accept an application for Critical Illness Cover and only in very limited circumstances.

Speaking about their survey, Chris Morgan, Lead Financial Adviser of Unusual Risks said;

‘Over the last year there has once again been a decrease in the availability of Life Insurance products for British Expats living abroad. Although the majority of the mainstream UK Insurers such as Legal & General, Friends Life and Aviva have all now withdrawn from offering this type of cover, there are still limited options for Expats seeking Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover’.

‘There are still many groups of British Expatriates that have genuine reasons for needing a UK based Life Assurance plan, such as those with property interests, outstanding mortgage or tax interests in the UK. We have also met British Expatriates who require Life Assurance to protect family members and children who are still residents in the United Kingdom’.

Unusual Risks were also able to report that the average amount of Life Insurance being taken out by British Expats is now £383,125, which is a reduction on the previous year’s figure of £430,714. We believe this is due to new restrictions, with cover only being available to those with a UK Property, UK Mortgage, UK Bank Account or close dependents remaining in the UK.

Chris Morgan and Unusual Risks have been helping the British Expatriate community for the last seven years to arrange all types of Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover policies to meet their needs. They are experienced at tailoring Life Insurance policies for British people living abroad in all corners of the world.

We have recently seen a sharp increase in UK Citizens living abroad who approach us looking for the security of a UK Life Insurance policy with a large reputable company.

BRITISH EXPAT LIFE INSURANCE & CRITICAL ILLNESS COVER … What’s Important !

It seems a completely obvious point, but the most important factor when taking out either Life Insurance or Critical Illness Cover is making certain the policy actually covers Expats living abroad. Most of the UK insurers actually exclude people who live outside of the UK.

It’s crucial to check that you are applying for the right policy ! Better still get someone else to check, who is qualified and has vast experience of placing cover for British Expats. Why would you take a chance with something so important?

In my last two articles I’m came out heavily on these points …

http://www.expatriate-life-assurance.co.uk/?p=317 (The Pitfalls when buying Insurance?)

http://www.expatriate-life-assurance.co.uk/?p=311 (Third Party or Fully Comprehensive?)

We feel very strongly about people trying to take out cover, where they may not be giving the insurer the full picture about their health, or may not be disclosing their residency situation fully. We have met clients prepared to make false declarations in order to make a small two pounds per month saving on their monthly premiums.

They were willing to risk the policy not paying out the benefits, because of an incorrect declaration. To say this is ridiculous is an under statement, full disclosure of all the facts is essential when taking out a Life Insurance or Critical Illness Cover for any British Expat.

Disclosure needs to be made in regards to health and residential status, which will certainly mean answering more questions up front and following an “advice and recommendation” process. We strongly advice British Expats not to buy their Life Insurance through comparison websites or mainstream brokers, as it’s unlikely you will find the best insurance for your needs.

Unusual Risks have special arrangements with underwriters and insurers to assess eligibility for British Expats, which means you get the best possible service and premiums for your circumstances. Our insurers are “Expat Friendly” which means you can be sure the policy will offer you “fully comprehensive” cover.

BRITISH EXPATRIATE LIFE INSURANCE & CRITICAL ILLNESS COVER … The Pitfalls When Buying Insurance !

Why would you buy Life Assurance if it wasn’t “Expat Friendly”? I’m meeting more and more clients who have quotes for Life Assurance and/or Critical Illness Cover and they are not even certain the product is suitable for British Expats living outside the UK.

Most people contact me because they want the best quality cover, with a strong UK insurer and the security that comes with it. What I don’t understand is why would anybody even consider buying a product from an internet comparison site or through a mainstream broker if the products being offered were completely unsuitable?

Be sure to also see my previous article “Third Party or Fully Comprehensive”? http://www.expatriate-life-assurance.co.uk/?p=311

FULLY COMPREHENSIVE

There are several situation’s where a UK Insurer may consider offering cover to a British Expat living abroad, but you need to be aware that not all UK insurers offer cover to Expats. Expert specialist advice is essential to make sure you are offered “Fully Comprehensive cover” and not “Third Party” only cover.

INSURABLE INTEREST

Any UK Insurers offering Life Assurance or Critical Illness Cover to a Brit abroad is going to want clear evidence of “Insurable Interest”, which most consumers will not know how to do. This issue in itself alone could invalidate your Insurance policy in the future, so if you are a British Expat looking for cover, it’s best to seek specialist advice.

COMPETITIVE PREMIUMS

As a British Expat you are highly unlikely to qualify for the absolute cheapest policy offered in the market, because those insurers do not offer cover to people spending more than six months outside the UK. However, all is not lost because it is still possible to access the highest quality cover, at very competitive prices through a specialist broker.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Most leading UK insurers have specific terms and conditions relating to British Expats and especially strict criteria around “Insurance Interest” and “Residency”. Why would you spend your valuable spare time during evenings and weekends researching, when a professional adviser knows the answers already?

COMPARISON WEBSITES

Expat Life Assurance and Critical Illness Cover is not the type of policy you should be trying to buy on comparison websites, as most UK insurers have strict criteria around residency and you are likely to buy an invalid policy. They are simply unsuitable, so why would you even consider paying premiums for cover bought in this way?

MAINSTREAM BROKER

The average mainstream broker you could ask to offer advice on “Expat insurance”, will encounter this issue maybe once a year at the most. The one’s outside of the London financial district, probably hardly ever in their whole careers, so their knowledge on these issues is going to be very limited to say the least. I know this because many of them phone my office looking for help with their clients.

ADVICE & RECOMMENDATION

At Unusual Risks we only offer a “Fully Comprehensive” service with financial advice included. The premium you eventually receive will be very competitive, but we are unlikely to offer you the absolute cheapest premium in the market, because those products do not even cover British Expats living abroad. We believe it is crucial that the products we recommend are specific to the needs of British Expats and are “Expat Friendly”.

BRITISH EXPAT LIFE INSURANCE AND CRITICAL ILLNESS … Third Party? or Fully Comprehensive?

We have recently been approached by several Expat clients whose main aim has been to secure the absolute lowest premium for their Life Insurance and Critical illness Cover ….

The odd thing about this is that even though they are either living abroad already, or have intentions of living abroad in the near future, they are willing to sacrifice the quality of cover and specialist financial advice, for even the smallest of savings per month.

COMPARISON WEBSITES

There are several ways you could buy Life Insurance and Critical Illness as an expat, but the one way that we certainly DO NOT recommend is buying via“ Direct Offer” or via “Internet Websites”. These distribution routes do not include advice, therefore it is difficult to know for sure if the policy covers Expats. Most of the products offered through this route do not even cover British Expats, due to complex residency terms and conditions.

MAINSTREAM BROKERS

Many people approach “Mainstream Brokers” without realising they rarely encounter British Expats looking for Life Insurance and critical illness cover. This means they are increasingly likely to offer you a product that is unsuitable for an Expat. We regularly meet clients who have been offered an incorrect product, due to the lack of knowledge of the mainstream financial adviser.

SPECIALIST FINANCIAL ADVICE

Of course our recommended distribution route is through a “Specialist Financial Adviser” like Unusual Risks, because we have looked after literally hundreds of British Expats before and are completely up to date with the latest availability of products. This way you will receive the best “Expat Friendly” products available and be sure the terms and conditions of the policy are “inclusive” of your residential circumstances.

REAL LIFE EXAMPLES

We have been completely shocked these last few weeks by clients who have approached us for “quote comparisons” against products that won’t even pay out benefits to a British Expat upon a claim, or have restrictions around the counties that are included in the policy. Most UK Life Assurance Companies do not even offer cover and certainly will not be pay out benefits to an expat on a claim.

SPECIALIST PRODUCT

What is remarkable is that the quote comparison that we provided, was for an “Expat Friendly” product and was only £2 per month extra in premium. The margins between most Term Life and Critical Illness Cover products are actually very slim these days. The cost of “Fully Comprehensive” cover that is “Inclusive” of Expats is actually still very competitive.

SERIOUS ISSUES

So to look at Life Insurance using terminology normally used for car insurance. If you are going to be resident abroad and spend time outside of the UK, would you rather be covered only for “Third Party” cover or prefer to have “Fully Comprehensive” cover? We think the answer to this question is absolutely obvious, why would you pay any premium to an insurance company for a policy that simply does not cover you?

ADVICE & RECOMMENDATION

At Unusual Risks we only offer a “Fully Comprehensive” service with financial advice included. The premium you eventually receive will be very competitive, but we are unlikely to offer you the absolute cheapest premium in the market, because those products do not even cover British Expats living abroad. We believe it is crucial that the products we recommend are specific to the needs of British Expats and are “Expat Friendly”.
