British Expatriate – Critical Illness Cover

Unusual Risks were recently approached by Simon (Aged 41 ) who is a British Expat Banker for a major International Bank …

Simon has Life Insurance and Long Term Sick Pay Benefits with his current employer, but does not have any Critical Illness Cover. He has been posted in Singapore on a fixed term contract for the next two years and he’s concerned about the financial effects should he suffer a serious illness whilst abroad.

He has asked us to find him a Critical Illness policy that offers cover even though he is working abroad on a fixed term contract. The majority of Critical Illness policies that he had looked at before approaching us refused cover to British Expatriates Living Abroad.

Critical Illness Cover is extremely difficult to obtain for British Expats and is only normally offered in limited circumstances. However, there are still some insurance companies that will consider offering Critical Illness Cover if you are working abroad on a fixed term contract.

In Simon’s case we were able to arrange a Level Term Assurance, which included cover for both Life Assurance and Critical Illness Cover. We introduced him to a large UK life assurance company that are friendly towards his current residential status and towards British Expats in general.

Unusual Risks are specialists at finding Life Assurance and Critical Illness for British Expatriates living abroad. We are even able to arrange a medical and nurse screening outside of the UK to satisfy the insurance companies medical requirements.

British Expatriate – Life Assurance & Life Insurance

Unusual Risks were recently approached by Paul (Aged 36) who is a British Expat senior executive for an Insurance Company currently working in Bermuda.

He has already has substantial Life Assurance with his employer’s pension scheme, but has decided that he would also like a life assurance policy of his own. This will mean that he will have his own private provision if he is required to move to a different country or employer in the future.

Paul asked us to find him a Life Assurance policy that offered life insurance cover in return for guaranteed monthly premiums, instead of reviewable ones that he had seen elsewhere. This is because he would like the certainty of knowing that his Life Insurance premiums are fixed for the duration of the policy term.

He had found it difficult to find a Life Insurance policy that offered cover to British Expats, that was not on an annual renewable basis, where the premium was reviewed each year. Many of the options that he had found elsewhere for British Expats were for no longer than a 10 year term.

In this case we arranged a Level Term Assurance for Paul over a 40 year term, where the benefit level was a multiple of his salary package. We introduced him to a large UK life assurance company that are friendly towards his current residential status and towards British Expats in general.

We were even able to arrange a medical and nurse screening for him outside of the UK to secure him the policy and satisfy the insurers medical requirements.

British Expatriate – Life Cover & Critical Illness Cover

Unusual Risks were recently approached by couple Jamie (Aged 28) who is a Director of a major airline and his partner Eleanor (Aged 26) who works as a personal assistant/secretary.

Jamie is currently working between the UK and Spain for his company and is concerned about the potential financial effects of a critical or serious illness could have on their finances. His company provide a good employee benefits, which include some Life Assurance, but sadly no Critical Illness Cover.

Eleanor works mainly in the UK and also has employee benefits with her company, such as a pension and life cover. Before approaching us David had looked at alternatives for them both and had only managed to find “Annual Renewable” options. This had prompted him to look for something more comprehensive from a UK Insurance provider.

We were asked to find them Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover that would take into account that they were UK Citizen’s at times working abroad. Unusual Risks are experienced at finding Life Insurance and Critical Illness plans for business people who are going to be spending time outside of the United Kingdom with their occupation.

In this case we arranged Level Term Assurance with Critical Illness Cover on a joint basis for £250,000 sum assured. We introduced them both to a large UK Insurance Company, who were friendly towards his current residential status and career plans.

“Check Out” British Expatriate Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover …

When visiting a UK supermarket these days we seem to be bombarded with offers of financial services such as credit cards, travel insurance, savings accounts, current accounts and of course Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover.

For UK residents buying Life Assurance or Critical Illness Cover can be as simple as taking your groceries through the checkout. However, this is sadly not the case for British Expats living abroad because many of the UK Insurance Companies specifically exclude them from taking out Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover.

Our recent survey established that only 25% of UK Life Insurance Companies would accept an application from a UK Citizen living abroad. This means that British Expats looking for Life Insurance, Life Assurance and Critical Illness are more likely to be excluded from or declined when applying for Life Insurance cover.

Unusual Risks are a UK firm of financial advisers that like British Expatriate Super Markets, are stocked with high quality “financial” brands that are available to British Expats living abroad. British Expatriates Excluded By The UK Insurance Industry …

Unusual Risks have received many enquiries and questions from British Expatriates, asking whether they are able to get Life Insurance and Critical Illness products. These are some of the more common questions we are asked by people approaching us for Life Assurance to protect their Mortgage, Home, Children or Family.

Client Question …

“We’re moving this summer and I’m having problems getting Life Insurance because apparently my nomadic lifestyle makes me a higher risk for insurance. Others must have faced this and found a solution?”

Unusual Risks Answer …

“It’s true that the majority of Insurance Companies see British Expats as a higher risk for insurance.  However, there are Insurance Companies that we can recommend that will offer Life Insurance or Life Assurance without charging excessive higher premiums. Some of the companies we recommend will even offer Critical Illness Cover to some UK Expatriates in certain circumstances”.

Client Question …

“I’m already living abroad as a British Expat and I’ve been turned down by a UK Insurance company because I was not able to provide them with a UK doctor to go on their application form. Does this mean I’ll be permanently excluded from taking a UK Life Insurance policy?”

Unusual Risks Answer …

“It’s true that the majority of UK Life Insurance companies will exclude a British Expatriate from insurance  if they have moved their medical notes to a doctor in another country. However, there are still a few companies that are willing to help and we are still able to arrange Life Insurance for British Expats. We are able to arrange an Insurance medical with any UK speaking, qualified doctor in your new adopted country”.

Client Question …

“We’ve only got a few months left on our Term Life Assurance and I’m starting to find out that it’s hard to renew it now we are more permanently abroad. Is it impossible to renew existing Life Insurance policies for British Expats who are living abroad?”

Unusual Risks Answer …

“It’s true that it is sometimes difficult or impossible to renew an existing UK Life Insurance plan once you have moved abroad. The majority of UK Insurance Companies have strict policies on providing Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover for people living abroad. We have researched all of the UK Insurance Companies recently and are able to report that there are still some Insurance Companies that will provide Life Insurance for British Expats and in certain circumstances also Critical Illness Cover”.

Unusual Risks Featured In The Financial Times – FT Adviser …

Unusual Risks and their “Expatriate Insurance Survey 2014” have recently been featured in The Financial Times Publication – The Financial Adviser Newspaper.

The Financial Adviser Newspaper is the leading Insurance Industry publication in the UK and is well respected recognition for the launch of our new Insurance Service for British Expatriates who are living abroad.

The Expatriate Insurance survey asked UK Life Assurance companies to indicate if they offered insurance products to British Citizens who spend more than six months abroad per year. Only 25% of Life Assurers were prepared to accept insurance applications from people living abroad, with 75% responding that they would not offer cover, or would require the applicant to be in the UK more than six months per year.

The Insurance Industry has a long history of excluding certain groups of individuals from being able to access Life Insurance and Critical Illness Cover products. There are many groups of British Expatriates that represent little, or no further risk over and above any other British Citizen applying for cover. We have decided to offer the Expatriate Insurance Service to UK Expats who are feeling excluded by the Life Insurance Industry.

British Expatriate – Critical Illness Cover For Company Executives …

Unusual Risks were recently approached by David (Aged 29) who is the Financial Director of a major multi-national company …

He is currently working in the US for his company and is concerned about the potential financial effects a critical or serious illness could have on his life. His company provide a good Pension Scheme with Life Assurance included, but offer nothing if he were to suffer from a critical illness.

Before approaching us David had looked at most of the US Critical Illness policies that were available and had only found  policies that offered “Annual Renewable ” Benefits. This had prompted him to look for something more comprehensive from a UK Insurance provider.

We were asked to find him Critical Illness Cover that would take into account that he was a UK Citizen working abroad. Unusual Risks are experienced at finding Life Insurance and Critical Illness plans for business people who are going to be spending time outside of the United Kingdom with their occupation.

In this case we arranged Level Term Assurance with Critical Illness Cover included for an amount equivalent to four times his gross annual salary. We introduced him to a large UK Insurance Company, who were friendly towards his current residential status and career plans.

British Expatriate – Whole of Life Assurance – Over 50’s Life Assurance

Jennifer (Aged 63) is a retired Bank Cashier, currently living in Portugal, who approached Unusual Risks looking for Over 50’s Life Assurance …

She is looking to make sure that her loved ones have enough money available in the UK to make any funeral and repatriation arrangements on her behalf. Having an Insurance plan in the background would mean that she could use some of her remaining capital and savings during her time abroad.

Due to Jennifer’s pre-existing medical conditions she has found it difficult to find suitable insurance in the past and has even been declined for insurance by one leading Insurance Company. Because of this past experience she would prefer not to have to take any medical or nurse screening.

She has heard a lot about Over 50’s Life Assurance, which doesn’t require any medical evidence, but because of her residential status, is unsure if she will be able to get Over 50’s Life Assurance. Her requirements are for enough insurance to cover the basic expenses involved with a funeral and repatriation.

We arranged Over 50’s Life Assurance for Jennifer, which covered her for a set amount of money for a set monthly premium. We introduced her to a UK Insurance Company, who offer cover to those over the age of 50 without medical evidence and who were friendly to her current residential status.

British Expatriate – Level Term Assurance for Family Protection …

Geoff (Aged 53) and Janet (Aged 44) approached Unusual Risks looking for Life Insurance to protect their family whilst they are in the Cayman Islands …

Both of them are working there currently as an IT Consultant and as a Personal Assistant to Executive Management of an Investment Company. They have two young children, so want to make certain there is enough money left behind if something was to happen to either or both of them.

They both have death in service benefits with their companies, which would pay out to each other should  either of them die. However, they had decided that they wanted some other separate form of additional protection in the form of a UK Life Assurance Policy in the background.

They had already been offered “Annual Renewable” Term Assurance, but didn’t feel confident in this style of policy because it is renewed every 12 months. Their requirement was for a Term Assurance that would be in place permanently until their retirement ages.

We arranged Level Term Assurance plans for both Geoff and Janet, which covered them both for a multiple of their annual earnings through until retirement. We introduced them to a large UK Insurance Company, who were friendly to their current residential status.

British Expatriate – Whole of Life Assurance for Funeral Expenses …

Unusual Risks were recently approached by Patricia (Aged 54) and Paul (Aged 56) who are currently living in Mallorca, Spain …

They are both working part time and enjoying their semi-retirement in the sun. Although they have lived between Spain and the United Kingdom for a while and are contented with their lifestyle, they have one financial concern for which they had not managed to find the right solution.

Both are concerned about what would happen with regards to their funeral expenses and repatriation to the United Kingdom should they die. They both have family back in the United Kingdom that would have to make arrangements on their behalf and they want to make sure there is enough money if anything should happen.

Both Patricia and Paul had discussed this and had decided that they would prefer a UK Life Assurance policy, but had found it difficult to get UK insurance because of the time they spend in Mallorca. They had tried a number of different Insurance Companies, but all they had been offered so far was a Term Assurance for a maximum of 10 years.

In this case we arranged Whole of Life Assurance for each of them with enough money to pay for any funeral, repatriation costs and also enough to repay a small outstanding car loan. We introduced them to a large UK Insurance Company, who were friendly towards their current residential status.
